if you had asked me six years ago where I would be in six years the answer would probably be anywhere but here. i suppose that is the way things are supposed to work. these sentiments are meant in a positive perspective, just unexpected.

There are two types of smiles in pictures...there are smiles that communicate to the viewer: this person is smiling because there is a picture being taken. Then there are smiles that communicate to the viewer: this person is smiling because at this very moment life was being lived to the fullest and there's no where else they would rather be.

8 states in 23 years. I guess that's what I missed growing up....the ability to be surprised that a year is enough to actually understanding the ways and means of a person. In all actuality this is very similar to the song here...just a big waste of time.

some interesting things happened to me this weekend:

1. i took a bump on my flight to VA to fly 2 hours later, first class and also received a free round trip ticket. It was uncannily similar to the Seinfeld episode where Jerry flies first class and Elaine gets stuck in coach. The food is better (croutons with bruschetta, salami, cheese, cookies etc...a snack pack if you will), the drinks are free (rum and coke and bourbon and coke if you're curious), the flight attendant was exceedingly nice, insisting that we use the warm towels before eating (and you think I'm making it up) and the guy sitting next to me was an underwater welder which made for interesting conversation. All in all, it was quite an enjoyable affair.

2. On my way back as I was about to purchase my ticket for the el in Chicago a lady approached me and offered me a card that had 2 days of a 7 day pass remaining. My fare was free and upon arrival to my destination I was able to give the card to another prospective passenger. In essence it was "paying it forward" and I'd like to think that that card has spawned a wave of goodwill throughout Chicago.

3. Christmas Eve the family and I assisted at the church with the Norfolk Emergency Shelter Team, a program for the homeless to give a meal and a place to sleep at the church for the night. My brother and I volunteered to outside and "police" the line. Little did we know how much policing was involved. All women are let into the shelter and 45 men are selected through a lottery. 65 men showed up. As Ben and i selected numbers one man became convinced that we were looking at the numbers and intentionally preventing him from entering. Let's just say cussing and yelling was involved. This experience launched some spirited discussion amongst my siblings and I concerning the role of government and the class system of the United States. No matter what side you're on it obvious that some kind of change is needed.

i'm back in milwaukee, tater tots
